RALLY UPDATES

20 Jan 2016

I hope everyone had a very good Christmas and new year and are now ready to take on 2k16. Happy to share I had lovely holidays boating down south and have taken the opportunity to use this time also as a chance to talk to potential sponsors/teams for what Motorsport I'll be involved in this year. Currently I am leaning toward starting to race a south island series in cars this year as suggested 2kcup, SI Formula Ford, Minis, SI Enduro etc. As well as these options i am also being realistic about the possibility of motox or getting back into the kart. There is a lot of deciding to be done over the next couple months to prepare for the next racing season but I can't wait to see what I might be behind the wheel of very soon.

2015 Canterbury Enduro

First off I'd like to say a big thanks to everyone involved in making the Christchurch Enduro a happening event and to all the sponsors who stepped onboard as well. A lot of organising and hard work went on behind the scenes and on the day so thank you.

Once again I was not racing and although this is becoming an annoying habit I really did enjoy helping out and watching all the chaos unfold. The cadets and JR classes raced hard for 30 mins each and showed us no matter how young you are, you can still race the distance.

We saw in the junior race sudden changes of weather meaning some would choose different tyre strategies than others. Running slicks was the winning tyre option as the rain, hail, thunder and lightening on become serious in the last 5 mins where their enduro was red flagged and deemed too dangerous to continue.

For the senior enduro the weather was much the same, starting out dry but by the end turning the track into a swimming pool, this race also being red flagged because of too many karts aqua planning. Many drivers did their compulsory pit stops early in the race and then came in later for driver change. It was hard to tell which strategy was most effective as when the rain started some struggled more than others.

All round a good enduro and it was just very unfortunate the weather was not on our side. Congratulations to all the winners and podium placers for their respective classes!

Let's hope next year the weather is more kind to us and I also am behind the wheel.

Next event is the Wigram Speed Festival held at Mike Pero Motorsport Park on 15-17th January 2016!

Sorry for not updating for so long been doing some travelling and investigating into different areas of Motorsport. First I'd like to say a congrats to Craig Lowndes for winning Bathurst, yes I was cheering ford but happy to still have two fords in the lead for the championship and what a good race this years Bathurst was. Hard luck to the girls team but plenty opportunity to do improve next year was good to see them giving it a go.

I've spent most of my time lately going to tracks in the south island helping teams and talking to mechanics, managers, team owners and drivers about getting more involved and happily have been asked to come help out whenever possible to get a better idea of how top race car teams work and how involved they are. Really thankful for the opportunity, can't wait to the next couple rounds. Also been running a couple karters at Canterbury as I am currently not racing at this point in time. Looking forward to everything happening in the near future and will try keep this website more updated!

South Island Endurance Series

Was a great weekend at Ruapuna with lovely weather all weekend. Learnt so much and am feeling a lot more confident about being on the radio. Got to chat with plenty drivers and discuss with them about their careers and how to improve my racing. Really enjoyed helping out and was very cool to get a couple hotlaps in a Nissan GTR! Can't wait to see where my Motorsport career heads next.

Garden City Championship

It was planned that I would run a driver again however a couple days before the championship it was decided I would race. So the pit crew and myself worked hard to prepare a kart good enough for the race meeting.

On day one we had two qualifying sessions where I qualified the kart quickest out of the drivers with slicks on (as the track was wet) and was feeling happy with how everything felt. Unfortunately during the next two races we had motor issues and decided to retire from the championship meaning I would go back to helping other drivers throughout the weekend.

Was unfortunate we had such bad luck but was good to help others out and see some very good drivers get on the podium. Next up is the South Island Endurance Series at Ruapuna, (Mike Pero Motorsport Park) where I'll be on the radio and helping out again.

Had an awesome weekend down in Dunedin at a car event. The car show displayed various limited edition models of motor vehicles, large displays of motorbikes, cars and karts that are currently being raced and the best part being all the famous race cars that are now displayed in museums across  New Zealand. Thanks to the team effort of car enthusiasts who made this event happen, i really enjoyed talking to well known racers about their Motorsport careers and i learnt a lot from them about how to deal with fans, your race team and the stress of having a job as a professional driver. We often assume it would be all fun but a lot of hard work is expected from these drivers on race day and behind the scenes. Was really inspired by these racers, can't wait to go back next year and catch up with them!

Quick update

Been training really hard to get super fit for the Canterbury Enduro race at the start of December. Motor has been pulled off the kart and work being some to have the kart in mint condition for the next big meeting. Not much racing happening right now as it is our winter season and nobody enjoys racing in the rain. Next update will be for the Garden City Championships at the end of September!

Southern Series

Day One - Official Practice

Dunedin track was extremely slippery on practice day but we managed to make some improvements to the karts and lose a couple tenths of a second after some sessions.

At Invercargill the track was slightly wet but after the first practice session there was an obvious dry line so both karts went out on slicks. Both Hannah and Josh got much quicker throughout the day and with changes made to gearing, jets and new tyres put on we were ready for race day one at Invercargill.

Day Two - Race day at Invercargill

Hannah's class rotax max lights were first on the track for their qualifying sessions. Qualified in fifth and had two good heats to start the pre-final in sixth. Hannah finished the day in an impressive fifth.

Josh qualified 3rd in the cadet and had some really good races to finish day one in 3rd place. I really enjoyed doing driver training with him and making improvements to have some of the quickest times of the day.

Day 3 - Race Day at Dunedin

Dunedin track didn't suit Hannah or Josh as much as Invercargill had and we struggled to find quick pace throughout the day but they both stayed out of trouble in the races and finished 6th in the final. This meant Josh came 4th overall for the whole Southern Series and Hannah came 6th.

Both drivers were very quick and we all had a great weekend and learnt a lot. I rewlly enjoyed running Josh most of the weekend and watching him get so much quicker every race. Congrats to all the  podium finishers waa tough competition. Was really fun to stay at a relaxing hotel on our way back up north and finishing the weekend off by watching the Formula 1, Indycar and V8 Supercars!

Next big event coming up is the 3 day meeting of the Garden City Championship, so I'll keep updating this site coming up to the event.

Race fitness is so important!

Race fitness is so important!

Won't be in the kart for a couple months while my arm repairs and the kart is fixed. Next karting event will be the 2015 Southern Series where i will pitcrew for a karter who has also just moved into senior lights. Will be a great event that i get to pull spanners for just unfortunate i won't be behind the wheel myself. In the meantime keep racefit with plenty of cardio, muscle building and exercise that speeds up recovery. Watch this page for updates at the Southern Series!!

Not the best day at the track. Won race 1 + 2 with a 3rd, 2nd and dnf to follow. We lacked pace but are working on the issue now. In the final i needed to finish in front of the guy coming second in points but unfortunately got taken out while leading the pack to end the day with an injured arm and shoulder. Still came away 2nd in points and will be an easy recovery so thanks to all the people who helped throughout the day. Had quality racing and now i have work to fix the kart up so wont be getting bored anytime soon.

Awesome first meeting in seniors, happily won 5/5 races to have a well deserved 1st place overall. Congrats to all the other class winners, had awesome competition in our class and really enjoyed the racing between us! Happy to finally be getting decent results, just shows that all the hard work does pay off! Thanks to the team at WKS for the senior gear and all your help. Another big thanks to all my sponsors for your support. Will be out of the kart doing testing getting prepared for the next meeting.
